It measures the average volume of individual red blood cells.
Why it is tested
It is commonly used to help classify anaemia and other blood cell changes.
Low results
Low results may be associated with iron deficiency or thalassaemia.
High results
High results may be associated with vitamin B12 or folate deficiency.
