Health Conditions
Sickle Cell Trait
One copy of the sickle cell gene.
Overview
Sickle cell trait means carrying one copy of the sickle cell gene (rather than two, as in sickle cell disease). Most people with the trait are healthy and unaware they carry it unless tested.
Symptoms
Most people with sickle cell trait have no symptoms. Rarely, under extreme physical stress (very intense exercise, high altitude, dehydration), some complications have been reported.
Risk Factors
Sickle cell trait is inherited from a parent who carries the gene; it's more common in people with African, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and South Asian ancestry, reflecting historical links to malaria protection.
Common Blood Tests
Haemoglobin electrophoresis or genetic testing identifies sickle cell trait, often picked up through newborn screening or family testing.
Lifestyle Information
Most people with sickle cell trait live entirely normal lives without special precautions, though staying well hydrated during intense exercise is a sensible general precaution.
When to seek medical advice
Genetic counselling is worth considering if you and a partner are both planning a pregnancy and either of you may carry sickle cell trait, since this affects the chance of a child having sickle cell disease.
