Understanding BMI

BMI is a screening tool that estimates whether your weight is appropriate for your height. It does not measure body fat directly and does not account for factors such as muscle mass, body composition, age, sex or ethnicity. Some clinical guidelines recommend different BMI thresholds for people from different ethnic backgrounds because the relationship between BMI and health risk can vary between populations.
